A Handful of White Cats in Small Crates Changed Everything

Every white cat living in East Asia may carry a genetic echo of a founding group that merchants transported across Central Asia approximately 1,300 years ago. A study led by Yu Han and Professor Luo Shujin of Peking University, published in Cell Genomics on November 27, 2025, sequenced nuclear and mitochondrial DNA from 22 feline specimens excavated at 14 Chinese archaeological sites spanning roughly 5,000 years. The conclusion: domestic cats (Felis catus) did not reach China through any local process of taming. They arrived as prestige objects, imported along the Silk Road during its peak period of approximately A.D. 500 to 800.

Clade IV-B: The Genetic Postmark from Central Asia

Of the 22 specimens, 14 were identified as domestic cats (Felis catus). All 14 shared a mitochondrial DNA signature called clade IV-B, a maternally inherited lineage marker that does not recombine across generations, making it a clean tracer of descent. The signature is rare in European and Western Asian domestic cats, which rules out the slow, continent-wide drift that would be expected if cats had simply followed trade goods eastward across Eurasia over centuries.

The closest published genetic match for clade IV-B is a domestic cat excavated at Dhzankent, in present-day Kazakhstan, radiocarbon-dated to between A.D. 775 and 940, currently the oldest known domestic cat found anywhere along the Silk Road. It sits geographically and chronologically between the Near Eastern origin of cat domestication, roughly 9,500 to 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, and the Chinese sites in the study. Fourteen animals across separate sites, all carrying the same rare Central Asian signature, point to a very small founding population that arrived together or in close succession: a genetic bottleneck, not a gradient.

Why East Asia Has So Many White Cats

The oldest confirmed domestic cat in the dataset came from Tongwan City, Shaanxi province, radiocarbon-dated to approximately A.D. 730, the Tang Dynasty. Genomic reconstruction identified this animal as a healthy male with a long tail, short fur, and a coat that was fully or partially white.

The researchers interpret the founding population as cats selected specifically for appearance: all-white or mackerel-tabby with white patches. In their reading, these were not working animals brought to deal with mice in a grain store; they were chosen for rarity and visible value to elite recipients. The downstream effect persists: the study notes that the proportion of white-coated cats remains higher in East Asia than anywhere else in the world. A genetic bottleneck imposed on a small, appearance-filtered founding group left a coat-color bias baked into the regional population across more than 1,200 years.

The Han Dynasty Cat Is a Ghost

The long-held assumption, repeated in popular accounts and some academic literature, is that cat domestication in China occurred during the Han Dynasty, which ran from 206 B.C. to A.D. 220. The Cell Genomics study contradicts this directly: the dataset contains no pet cat remains from the Han period. The oldest confirmed domestic cat in the entire sample dates to A.D. 730, more than five centuries after the Han Dynasty ended. A felid ulna reported from Chang’an City, the Han capital, has been cited as a possible counter-example, but its identity as a domestic cat has been critically disputed and was not resolved by this study.

A second myth falls in the same paper. Leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis), a completely different felid species from Felis catus, are known to have lived alongside humans in Shaanxi farming communities approximately 5,400 years ago. This cohabitation has previously been cited as evidence of early cat domestication in China. The study’s authors challenge that framing directly: cohabitation is not domestication. A leopard cat tolerating proximity to a grain store, feeding on rodents that human settlement attracts, is not becoming a house cat. Genomic and radiocarbon evidence establishes that commensal leopard cats appear in archaeological contexts from at least 5,400 years ago, with the last confirmed records around A.D. 150, centuries before Felis catus arrived.

What the Bones Cannot Tell Us Yet

The genomic data establishes a Levantine origin for the Chinese domestic cat population and points to the Silk Road as the corridor of transmission. The researchers themselves describe the Dhzankent connection as “tantalising clues” rather than confirmation. The exact overland route, the number of separate introduction events, and the founding population size all remain unknown. The fate of Prionailurus bengalensis in Chinese human settlements after Felis catus arrived is entirely unaddressed. These are not weaknesses in the finding, they are the questions the finding makes possible to ask for the first time.

A Knockout Study About Ancient Cat Bones, Her Words, Not Mine

Melinda Zeder, an archaeozoologist at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History who had no involvement in the research, told Science magazine that the study was “a knockout study.” Zeder is one of the most cited researchers working on animal domestication. Her endorsement is not peer review and should not be read as one, but “knockout” is not the vocabulary of cautious scientific commentary, and something in 22 sets of ancient feline remains apparently made a seasoned archaeozoologist briefly forget she was talking to a journalist.
